Starting school can be seen as a big adventure for young children.  They are moving on and into an environment which will be exciting, stimulating, challenging and fun.  Quite often it is the parent who is more anxious than the child.  Parents can worry about issues that will not have occured to the

child to consider.

Common concerns are
• Will my child make friends?
• Will my child keep up with the progress expected?
• Is my child happy? If not why not?
• How often can I talk with my child's teacher?

Parents should try to avoid communicating these anxieties to the child and share the excitement of starting school.  When the parent shows a positive attitude to school and learning the child has a greater chance of thriving in his/her new class.
There are many ways a parent can make the experience of starting school enjoyable and stress free.  We have listed a few to get you going.
