Primary Schools 1

A set of five sessions - Your Child Matters

1) Building positive relationships
2) Setting routines and boundaries
3) Positive behaviour management
4) Sibling rivalry
5) Avoiding conflict and conflict resolution

This is our most popular set of workshops. Participants take the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on their family relationships, routines and activities.

They are encouraged to look at their child's world, the influences, the language used and the hidden messages that affect the child's behaviour. We have seen many parents turn their family life around from continual conflict and nagging to co-operation and enjoyment.

Topics covered include
• Assertiveness rather than aggressive language
• Establishing clear expectations, with rewards and consequences
• Peaceful mealtimes and bedtimes- what works for me
• Examining the circle of influence around the child
• Taking time out and negotiation skills

Some schools have invited particular parents to attend these sessions for a variety of reasons. We are very sensitive to the needs of parents experiencing family breakdown, bereavement, financial hardship or children with special needs. The sessions work best when there is a small group of 5-15 parents. They feel they are able to speak confidentially and build a strong bond with the facilitators.

The complete course fee is £550
Sessions can be arranged individually. These cost £150 each.

Protecting Your Child

(Internet and Mobile Phone Safety - Essential information for all parents)

This is an important workshop for all parents. The facilitators guide parents through the maze of advantages and disadvantages of new technology. The pitfalls, dangers and conflicts that can arise when children use or misuse mobile phones and computers are discussed. Parents will be able to make informed choices and will have a clearer idea of how to ensure their child uses the technology safely.

Topics covered include
• Parental controls
• Cyberbullying
• Networking sites
• Ground rules to avoid conflict
• Signs of internet abuse

Both our facilitators have completed the Ambassador training with CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection). Video clips are used to illustrate how vulnerable youngsters are and what parents can do to protect them.

We can follow up this workshop with an assembly for the pupils in the school to support the parents and staff who are teaching their children about internet safety.

The workshop usually lasts two hours.
The fee for this workshop is £150
The workshop + assembly is £200

Primary School Courses

A set of two workshops for parents of children in the first year of school

Supporting Your Child in School
Helping Your Child with Reading

These two workshops are designed to support parents whose children are just starting school. The facilitators lead discussions that help parents prepare their child for school. The first session attempts to remove some of the anxieties parents face and gives strategies for supporting the child's learning. We give suggested activities that can help to develop the generic skills of curiosity, imagination, observation and memory. The second session focuses on reading and gives parents a valuable insight into the reading process. Parents will have a greater understanding of how reading is taught and how they can help at home.

These two workshops often work well when they are booked to coincide with the child's first visits to the classroom in the summer term. Parents are able to leave their child with the teacher and go to the hall or group room for the presentation. This helps the school to establish the partnership as early as possible.

The fee for the two workshops is £300
