Helping your child make friends (Our Ten Top Tips)

1.    Teach your child early social skills like saying hello, please and thank you
2.    Be a role model. Welcome your friends and demonstrate good listenng and sharing.
3.   Encourage your child to engage in conversations and praise them for listening
4.   Sometimes let them experience losing the game
5.   Ask the child what he/she thinks he did to make other people happy today, and praise them for showing kindness.
6.   Don't try to sort out their problems for them. Be a guide, mentor and confidante when they are in difficulty
7.   Show that you understand that they sometimes feel sad or lonely
8.   Encourage them to have more than one friend
9.   Avoid choosing their friends for them. They have to learn to exercise their own judgement
10. Avoid humiliating a child in front of their friends, particularly by being sarcastic.
